The last thing a landlord wants is problems finding tenants for their property or a phone call informing them there is property damage. To keep your property in peak condition it’s critical to handle pest control seriously and promptly.
When a pest establishes a secure, comfortable home for itself, it is unlikely to leave. As a landlord, it’s your responsibility to control pest infestations. Pests are highly likely to cause property damage, safety concerns, or disease transmission once they establish themselves on your property. For these reasons alone, it’s crucial to address pest control comprehensively and proactively.
Nobody likes to live in a house where there are pest issues. Repeated pest issues in a house or apartment building will probably lead to your renters looking for new housing, and it will be more difficult for you to rent out the space once it is vacant again. As a landlord, you want to keep everyone’s health in mind and make a comfortable place for renters to live.
There are a few signs to watch out for if you’re concerned about a pest problem arising on your property:
Inspect the attic, basement, and crawlspace frequently because these are all common locations for a pest infestation.
Make sure that all communal spaces, including lobbies, corridors, utility rooms, community kitchens, game rooms, etc., stay tidy and uncluttered. The more you can restrict the options for pests to select your property, the better.Â
Eliminate as many potential nesting sites on the exterior of your property as you can to reduce the opportunity for pests to find shelter. Wood piles, junk piles, and shrubbery are great nesting spots. Maintain short grass to eliminate insect hiding areas, and make sure all trash, compost, and recycling are locked away.
Standing water attracts all sorts of pests — especially insects, who thrive in moisture-rich environments.Â
Sending seasonal reminders to your tenants about typical pest infestations is a smart idea so they may take preventive action and be on the lookout for warning signs. Give them tips on keeping their home clean so they don’t attract pests in the first place.
